Any government agency becomes a closed corporation. A study of the Department of Defense conducted by an investigative committee of Congress revealed the fact that no idea presented by an outside source had ever been accepted and developed by the Department. As if this were not sufficient, the Energy Lobby has the Indian Sign on all Government representatives to the point that they cannot even talk about new energy sources. At one time, I made an appointment through a mutual acquaintance to see a White House Aide. When he learned that my visit was concerned with energy, he invited me to leave his office. He said that the power of the Lobby was so strong that he could not afford to let it be known that I had ever been there. I am sure that his fear was genuine.
The unfortunate fact is that our knowledge about universal energy has not progressed beyond the Neanderthal Age. Advancements in the medical and biological sciences have increased the life span and the food supply to the point that the population increases is completely out of hand. The present competition for available energy sources, if not checked, can only lead to a war in which there can be no victors. Considering the recent trend of events in the Persian Gulf, that war has already started.
In a democracy it is assumed that every one is equal, although the question. equal to what? is never resolved. My own conclusion is that the joint decision of a thousand fools is not necessarily the height of wisdom Th e only law that governs the case seems to be exponential rather than additive if two fools get together the output is idiocy squared rather than idiocy plus idiocy. Just think what a congress of fools can do to this country if the law holds true.
I have always wondered why it is that with so many politicians running around being helpful to all and sundry, the problems of the world never seem to get any less. Also, it bothers me that their only reason for entering politics in the first place was that of service to humanity Why is it that the politician ends up rich and the common run of humanity just gets poorer?
In my own experience as a teacher. I was always assured by the administrators that the only reason for their existence was that of making it possible for me to have the best working conditions. I have no doubt that this was the reason for their plush offices and magnificent desks, while my own cubby-hole was equipped with an army surplus gray metal desk and a rather rickety swivel chair. At least I could comment that I had my "swivel'- rights.
There can be no greater truth than that of the variation of Murphy's Law which states: No good deed goes unpunished. We are supposed to go through life doing good deeds, each one of which results in a kick in the teeth. If the popular view of paradise is correct, when we die we are given a harp and a halo and a cloud to sit on. The trouble is that the halo doesn't fit, we never had time to learn to play the harp, and the cloud turns out to be thistle down with the thistles left in.
The Biblical account of the Tower of Babel and the confusion of tongues is literally true. The confusion of the mind which resulted from it is far worse than words can convey. In the process of teaching, each student leaves the classroom with a completely different concept of what has been said, and not one is correct. Each one hears according to his own background or lack of it. Since each student has his own background, his own impression of what was said in class is so colored by it that we must question whether or not it is possible to teach anybody anything. Further, we must question whether or not the content of the lesson had any significance in the first place The point to be made is that the role of the teacher is that of inspiration rather than that of conveying information. If a teacher can inspire one student to try to learn something on his own during his entire career, he has achieved the pinnacle of success. We state as a matter of emphasis: The teacher must act as a trigger mechanism to inspire the learning process. Anything that he may say in class is only incidental.
The learning process is the only hope for the survival of the human species. We live in a closed system in which the internal pressures can only lead to self destruction. The development of space travel on a practical basis is the only safety valve. In order to survive, there must exist an expanding frontier. At present the only remaining frontier is that of space. In that case we had better learn how we can overcome the apparent barriers of distance and time. This book is intended to do just that.
The barriers of distance and time are nothing compared to the barriers of human ignorance and prejudice. It is odd that physical science: which is supposed to be the most objective of all the sciences, should claim as its bible the most subjective of all known theories, the theory of relativity. Dependence on this theory with all of its paradoxes and non-existent barriers, precludes the development of space travel on any practical basis. As a matter of human survival it must be bypass ed and given a place of historical significance only. Since the universe is one place and the supposed barriers are non-existent: "if we catch the early flight this evening we may arrive at Arcturus before dawn." This statement at least should sum up the goal of the future of space flight.
The present work began more than forty years ago. All of the mathematical analysis is completed. Books ready for publication are: The Mathematical Basis of Physical Reality, The Mathematical Interpretation of Physics, and The Equation of Physical Creation. Already published are: The Eternity Equation and The Energy of Physical Creation. This latter publication is available through the Carroll Research Institute, Post Office Box 3425, Columbia, South Carolina 29230. The Eternity Equation is presently out of print, but should be available at many college libraries. An updated version of the Eternity Equation is ready for publication. Among other things, it contains the complete mathematical analysis of room temperature superconductivity.
This is also contained in the fourth chapter of the Energy of Physical Creation.
Let it be stated to all: I have never worked in theory. My career has been in the field of engineering and in teaching. It is true that all of the books mentioned are highly mathematical, but in no way theoretical. Considering the fact that all existing theories are in error or are incomplete or both, it is my advice that they should be shunned like the plague. The use of mathematics as applied to a single truth is that of revealing other truths The continued application can reveal other truths in an ever expanding body of truth. This is the nature of the present development. It contains no theory whatsoever. If any proof of this fact is required, consider that of the reality of room temperature superconductivity as one incidental item.
It was at the college that I learned the real meaning of academic freedom and professional ethics. When I revealed my findings to my classes in physics, it was soon known throughout the school that I didn't agree with the currently accepted orthodoxy of relativity. The president of the college came to my office and very confidentially told me that I was being investigated by a group representing the American Physical Society from Ohio State University. He did not say, "Quit making waves" because that would have been a breach of academic freedom. In any case, his meaning was quite clear that any question of orthodoxy was not welcome on the campus. Incidentally, no such investigation ever materialized. This is just one small sample of academic freedom in America.
A teacher of English took it upon herself to put me straight. She had her students in English buy the book, "The Universe and Dr. Einstein" as a supplementary text. She explained to her students, some of which were Physics majors, "Dr Carroll is just not smart enough to understand Einstein's work." This is the true meaning of professional ethics.
I am glad to observe that the author of the aforementioned book had put the universe ahead of Dr. Einstein. As for the theory of relativity, Einstein himself didn't understand it. It is certain that if he had, he could not have believed a word.
After ten years, I left Fairmont State College to become Chief Engineer and Dean of Academics at the Test Pilot Training Division of NATC at Patuxent River, Maryland. This later became the U. S. Naval Test Pilot School. When I got there, I found that I was expected to teach Aerodynamics to a group of Navy pilots who had been flying for years. Since I was totally ignorant in that field, I figured that what I didn't know would fill a book in the process of writing, I applied all the principles of research. The book was accepted and published by John Wiley in 1960.
For those who are not acquainted with the principles of research, they are best summarized by the following: If you steal from one author that is plagiarism; if you steal from a dozen, that's research. I did research from every source available and even invented a few of my own. In any case, I never did learn anything about aerodynamics. I think the title sold the book. What publisher could turn down "The Aerodynamics of Powered Flight"?
It is impossible to separate science from human emotions. When I was a student it was drilled into me that all science and all scientists were completely objective. I thought that truth would be recognized and welcomed whenever it was presented Half a century later. I find that all scientists are concerned only with jockeying for position within the system and truth is not even an incidental consideration. The basic law of science is conform or perish. We may bring to mind Pontius Pilate's question: "What is truth?"
Some philosopher came up with the pronouncement: IN the realm of the blind the one-eyed man is king. I have news for that joker. If the blind ever find out that anyone can see, the man had better have a hidey-hole. If they get their hands on him, there won't be enough left to bury.
The human is the only entity in existence capable of believing any number of contradictory things simultaneously and having absolute faith in the validity of each one of them. Further, if any belief is threatened, the reaction is that of outraged belligerence. It seems that in the process of creation, reason was an afterthought which will take some time to develop.
The fears and phobias that beset the human race are too numerous to count. The fear of exceeding specified boundaries has been with the human race since the beginning of time. Sometimes these boundaries are physical. The feeling of unease may be directly related to the distance from home. There are many cases in which an individual may have a phobia so extreme as to be house-bound. Recovery from such a phobia, if it ever occurs, can be a long and painful process.
There is nothing wrong in imposing limits on human conduct. The Ten Commandments of the Old Testament gave us certain rules of deportment that made a lot of sense then and now. Somehow or other I don't remember one that said, "Thou shalt not learn."
Now hear the words of the Lord Jesus: "Greater things shall you do than I have done, because I go to the Father." The point to be made is that there are no limits set. Neither is there any condemnation implied. We are free to develop without fear of reprisals from God. Reprisals from man out of jealousy and spite is another matter. Since God sets no limits, why is it that man is so utterly determined to retain his ignorance at all costs?
In the study of space travel for the future, we have found that no limits apply to velocity and acceleration in outer space. The fact that the ship carries a space of its own may be an advantage in protecting it from cosmic ray damage. Even though the energy density in the space of the ship is quite tenuous with respect to that of earth, it must provide a protective screen. In the final analysis, a double hulled structure with a strong magnetic field can also be used as a particle trap.
We state again for emphasis: The mass energy of the universe does not describe the total. The nuclear disruption process with the release of mesons provides the possibility of a space drive that can cause the rocket to exceed the velocity of light by any amount required to shorten the time of a space journey. The goal of "Arcturus by dawn" is in no way impossible for the future.
As I see it, this goal is the only one big enough to unite humanity into a common cause. As long as we fritter away our energies and our resources in internal bickering and wars, the human race does not have as much chance as the proverbial snowball. Since the whole concept depends upon the release and control of the total energy of disrupted matter it boils down to a consideration of a single patent.
In the study of energy transfer, it is best accomplished at a condition of resonance. As the most common example, in a radio system, the receiver must be tuned to the frequency of the source. An excellent mechanical example is that of the coupled pendulums. If two identical pendulums are suspended on a tightly stretched cord instead of a rigid rod, the motion of one can disturb the other to a very slight extent. If one pendulum is given a swing while the other hangs free, the one that was at rest gradually builds up its swing until it has all of the energy and the first one is at rest.
In terms of analogy, we want to absorb the resonance frequency of the electron shells of the atom so that the electrons will be ingested into the nucleus. This will cause the disruption of the nucleus with the release of its energy. In order to do so we must have a device that may be termed a resonance absorber.
In the solar winds of space all of the lighter atoms up to and including iron have been identified. Primary cosmic ray groups have been identified as the decay products of helium, silicon and oxygen, as well as mesons, neutrons and protons. It seems that in the process of decay under the near absolute zero of outer space, the decay is random and fragmentary. What we desire is the final step of the decay process which is the release of mesons.
Since thermal energy is characterized by frequency, there is a Very definite relation between frequency and temperature. Since voltage applied to an electron causes a corresponding motion, and the electron in motion has a frequency manifestation, we may make a corresponding association between voltage and thermal energy. If an electrical heat transfer device is to be effective, it must transfer more heat than that which is developed by the resistance heating caused by current flow. This was the reason why it was so imperative that superconductivity at room temperature in the bismuth filaments should be achieved. The fact of accomplishment has been demonstrated by experiment.
The resonance absorber was patented under the very innocuous name of "Low Temperature Heat Transfer Device:' In theory it is possible to achieve the absolute zero of temperature as one application of it. In practice is it not as simple as it sounds. If we absorb thermal energy at room temperature, the corresponding resonance voltage is in the millivolt range and the corresponding current to be effective may be a hundred amperes or more. Then as the temperature is lowered by heat transfer at this voltage, the transfer of a lower frequency is required if the temperature is to be made lower still. This process is continued until all lower frequencies are removed, down to the final frequency of zero in order to achieve an absolute zero of temperature. The final question is: How can you transfer a zero frequency?
In terms of reality, we may as well forget the process. The only reasonable approach remaining is that of absorbing the resonance frequency or frequencies of the electrons in their shells. Since these frequencies are far above the range of those designated as thermal, the Voltage requirements of the resonance absorber must be increased to correspond.
It is known that K-capture occurs in which an electron from the first orbital shell is ingested into a nucleus. When this occurs, a nuclear proton ingests the electron from the K shell and becomes a neutron in the process. There is no proof that a neutrino was conveniently located within the nucleus to be ingested at the same time.
In the absence of the neutrino, the neutron now consists of 1858 positrons and electrons, and thus is a neutron isotope. Now we propose a reaction which will bypass the problem of proton-proton repulsion in the accomplishment of fusion. The hydrogen atom is composed of one proton with one planetary electron. Its ionization potential is measured to be about 13.6 volts. If the resonance frequency associated with this voltage is absorbed, capture of the planetary electrons by the nucleus will result in the proton becoming a neutron. If this is done on a reasonably large scale, and the resulting neutrons are brought into the proper proximity with each other various reactions must occur. The chief one may very well be grouping and mutual disruption to mesons under the action of spin forces. These forces are limited to about 10 ----12 centimeters.
The helium nucleus consists of two neutrons and two protons, with two planetary electrons in orbit. If the resonance frequency applying to the orbit can be absorbed, ingestion of the planetary electrons into the nucleus will result in a group of four neutrons. Since the original condition of stability depends upon the presence of proton-proton repulsion, the removal of this stabilizing effect will result in the collapse and disruption of the group.
It becomes clear that all atoms are inherently unstable. The action of attraction between the nucleus and the planetary electrons tends to cause the collapse of the electron shells. This is opposed by centrifugal force and stabilized by the resonances which apply. If the entire background of disturbing effects is removed, as in an absolute zero environment, a spontaneous disruption occurs. Absolute stability of systems under the action of the inverse square law of force requires an infinite central mass. This fact explains the random decay of radioactive elements. When the background of disturbances fluctuates sufficiently, the atom decays to the next lower step in its efforts to reach stability.
The resonance absorber is to act as a trigger mechanism. We desire the energy requirements to be negligible in relation to the energy released. In terms of energy transfer the higher voltage requirements to absorb the resonance frequencies of atomic shells means a corresponding lower current. It appears that all required systems are well within the range of present engineering practice.
In order to limit the current and increase the voltage to the desired value it appears necessary to create even smaller filaments of bismuth than those already tested. This is a field for further research. At present all that can be claimed is that proof of principle has been established.
The details of construction and application of the resonance absorber have not been given. Some information, but not much, may be gained from the patent itself. It is certain that research on such a project will require a mess of money, a lot of headaches and heartaches, and plenty of time. The first thing required is public interest to bring pressure to bear on a few politicians. Government interest and support is required.
