This was how our latest trip began. After a busy day, in one long week that was part of a never ending cycle, we relaxed for just a few moments and Rod commented how pleasant it would be to go to the beach the next day and camp out - leaving the hassles and technologies of the world behind for just one day. We both fell asleep with that thought in mind.
Next morning at breakfast Rod told the children if they finished their designated tasks in time, we would head out and have a short, but hopefully fun, trip. They were very excited at the possibility and eagerly set about their tasks. I myself worked madly to get files online for Van and get the laundry done so I'd be free to go as well. Wouldn't do to have them go without me!
With all the tasks finished, we contacted the park to be sure there was space available. The park ranger was quite amused to think we would consider it a potential problem, not that many are brave enough (or is it foolish enough?) to go camping on the beach in mid-January - our wintertime.
It seemed almost impossible - could it be so easy to just escape for a day? We were soon to find out as we quickly packed our gear in the truck and headed off. The hour drive passed quickly as we drove through the beauty of the Lowcountry. I had forgotten how lovely the way would be.
We drove down a back highway, massive oaks reaching over the road forming canopies overhead. The beauty of the land enveloped us even before reaching our destination. After arriving at the park we decided to drive around Edisto Island, following the main road. The homes were all so beautiful. It was fun to look and admire the design of each. The children had fun imaging what each home looked like inside. We would definitely have to look into leasing one for a week in the winter. That would most likely prove to be an excellent escape we thought.
But for now, back to reality. We already had an escape within grasp. All that was left was to sign in and pick a campsite. We found the most remarkable site too. #9 - a hide away that belongs in dreams.
Many of the campsites were sectioned off and resembled those found in any other campground up and down the coast; but a few, only a handful, were unique - such was #9. Tucked away to the side of the road, it was a small, carefully cleaned, camping area with a canopy of brush all around. The dune at the back of the brush hid the ocean that was only a few feet beyond it. The most marvelous plants and trees grew all around completely engulfing the site. It was a truly breathtaking, secluded piece of heaven.
As the children emerged from the truck, their laughter filled the air. Now I knew we had done the right thing in just picking up and coming.
