There are many unique sights to be seen in Beidlers Swamp. The oak and cypress trees below are an example of that. In the first image they are joined in such an unusual manner both at their roots and several feet up the trunks. Both refusing to give space to the other they grew into each other and reach up into the sky together.

The images directly above and below are examples of cancerlike growths found on the trunks of the overcup oak trees. Nearly every overcup tree has one or more large cancerlike growths on its trunk or lower limbs. These abnormalities of the outer living tissue, often called galls, are caused by fungal infection. Though not unique to overcups or even to oaks, there are more galls on overcups than on any other trees in the swamp. In the image below new growth forms within the gall.

Many old growth cypress trees are hollow. Weakened after hundreds of years, the heartwood has been consumed by fungi and bacteria. But because the cambium, or living layer, lies just under the bard, the trees can continue to live for many years.
